This was the kind of book where I really enjoyed it when I was reading, and then as soon as I was done I was like “meh”. I think what it boils down to is the whole book centres on Mal’s avoidance of chess and it’s not unpacked until like 70% of the way done and that just didn’t work for me. I wanted to be on Mallory’s side, but she ended up being annoying half the time
