I think people assume writing romance is easy, you make characters connect and kiss. But how can you write things people have heard before and still make it new and exciting?
(rhetorical question I been thinkin about)
I relate to the main character a lot her ideas about being a "parental figure" when she is just a child is similar to me. I found her needless aggression to be relatable. It was kinda like looking in a mirror. I wondered if I was like her. If I was placing invisible barriers to prevent myself from doing things because I needed to help people who didn't need me anymore. Needless to say I think her character really shines and initially it seemed over-the-top cheesy that I was not interested. But the more she talked about her family I got more interested in the book again.
Chess is not super important in this book and the writer uses a lot of leeway with certain concepts. But one thing I didn't like is use chess pieces are a simile for intimacy. And the male love interest seemed to be too perfect and I want to see more flaws in his character.
But it's a very good book for anyone who likes chess and romance. I think it is a good way to get women interested in such a male dominated space yet not in a pick me sense.

It was funny, it was enjoyable, it was sweet. But it definitely didn't need a 3rd act break up the book was strong on its own without the extra dose of drama

Did you read/watch The Queens Gambit and think..... "yeah, but what if we removed everything of substance and replaced it with sugar free cotton candy"
The main character's primary motivation/conflict was trute and senseless and held back for the bulk of the story to try to give it shock and gravity when it was revealed. To the point that the FMC came across annoying and whiny. What if we had some FMCs who didn't base their WHOLE lives and every decision they ever made on some sort of internalized bullshit that makes absolutely NO SENSE???
Also.... in the book the mother is chronically ill. However, as soon as the FMC starts leaving the house suddenly, the mother is fine and seamlessly takes over. Frankly, this was a convenient plot device that is HARMFUL. Chronic illness and chronic pain don't just disappear because someone's support system does.
The Chess part of the story was watered down and at times didn't make sense. It very much felt like someone just repeating chess terms they heard in an attempt to sound 'in the know'.
Everything was entirely predictable. Entirely.
