There was a lot of technical chess terms, and well researched I'm sure, but I failed to be actually immersed in the chess game and it was a lot of "tell" but not "show" for me (i.e. FMC plays so beautifully...ok...but how??). In contrast, one of my favourite books, The Cardturner by Louis Sachar, does a fantastic job introducing readers to the world of Bridge...while keeping me immersed in the story and plot. I couldn't help but compare it to The Cardturner throughout the book.
Not a fan of FMC's inner monologues nor the MMC's generic tall/dark/handsome mysterious persona.

This is my first Ali Hazelwood book, and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it. The reason why it isn't quite a five-star is that the ending was so abrupt. I know that Mal has gone through a lot, but her getting mad at Nolan made me angry. I would be even more in love with him if I found out he paid for me to be able to do what I love and not have to worry about my family. Mal is definitely self-destructive, which I can't blame her for, but I just feel like we could have had a different conflict; there were so many to choose from.

When you’re so into a story you get jump scared by an ‘epilogue’..
I loved it. The writing style, the humor, the characters - the chess games!
My only complaint is how mean everyone was to Mallory all the time. It felt a little bit like they were punishing her for punishing herself - not very loving if you ask me.
