Not actually a romcom - instead a deep dive into racism in the journalism industry. Not a bad thing, cos I still would have read it if they had marketed it as this. Just think it was a bit misleading.

An okay read, but there was way too much repetition in the language which made what could have been a good read frustrating instead.
I liked the fact that it promoted personal growth over being in a relationship, but unfortunately it took a while.
Tia was a really confusing character, in the workplace she had a really strong drive and was working hard to overcome corporate biases. I loved seeing her take on some difficult situations and triumph. But in her romantic endeavours she was quite juvenile and I didn’t like her attitude at times.
I’m definitely not the target demographic, especially age wise.

I'll forgive this book for the ending because I have been craving a story set in south east London about a black girl navigating a career and dating in this era, so so bad. I didn't even know I wanted it until I read this and I need more.

The Situationship is a great read. It's well written, The story progressed at a good pace and I could really see how Tia (our protagonist) developed as a character. Watching her navigate through relationship and work issues, I shared her triumphs and setbacks. I also had a couple of laugh-out-loud moments. I feel like I know each of the characters and not just the leading roles, but the friends and colleagues as well. The premise works throughout the story. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good rom-com.

REVIEW
When news researcher Tia's on-off ex returns from the USA, she's shocked to discover he has brought a girlfriend with him. Devastated, she decides that it's time to move on and turns to a dating app. When she matches with photographer Nate, he seems to be perfect for her. But they still have to have 'The Talk'.
I feel conflicted about this book. I realised early on that I'm not the target reader for this book, but I wanted to give it a fair go because it shouldn't matter how old the reader is (for reference, I'm an old suburbanite and the characters in this book are young, London urbanites). Still, romance is romance, right? Well, the romance is pretty superficial, and though I respected Tia's ultimate decision, It doesn't play to romance novel conventions. Maybe that's a conscious choice, but I feel like the book should be marketed as women's fiction instead. I found the exploration of Tia's self-development much more interesting than her connection with Nate (or Aaron) and truthfully? I didn't understand why 'The Talk' was such a huge elephant in the room to begin with. I did like Tia's friendships, and there are some genuinely funny moments that I could visualise (especially involving Luca).
Some of the descriptions became repetitive very quickly, but it was a solid debut, and I wish the author well in their future writing career.

I wasn't sure about this book when I started this. I knew that our main characters was a Person Of Colour working in a white dominated environments where she is forced to tame down her appearance especially her hair. We follow her as she meets up with friends and find out the boy who she has been waiting for while he was working away has meet someone. We follow the character as she rebounds from this and tries out internet dating and what happens when she meets them. I struggled with the language used for the dialogue here as it was a represented of the mannerism of the language there, which is hard to get used to. I enjoyed the writing style and would definitely would read more from this author.
