Since I had already seen the movie, I figured I was prepared for the book. Turns out not so much. Virtually nothing seems to happen for much of the book in the general, as opposed to the movie. But that doesn't stop the book from being compelling, which I know sounds strange. The characters are really apathetic to most of the things around them, and yet they're trying either to numb themselves more through drugs and alcohol and for some a number of other things, or they're using the drugs and alcohol to get themselves to feel better, or perhaps anything at all. Or they're doing far worse things to other people for a sick thrill. Despite the book having been released in 1985 I don't feel like much has changed in these past (almost) 30 years. Aside from the mentions of who and what was popular, that is. Which, I guess, says to me that many of us are as screwed up as we ever were and it's a cycle that may never end. I get the feeling this one is going to stay with me for a while.

hmmm i’m between 2.5-3 stars but i’ll round up. this book was pretty pointless & honestly irritated me until the last 40-50 pages. this is when ellis began to do what he does best which is making you feel extremely uncomfortable & adds a sense of looming dread. i found myself comparing this to the shards just because i looooved that book so much & has the same vibe as far as following rich hollywood kids who find themselves in horrific situations. there was even some crossover/easter eggs from the shards which was pretty fun but this was nowhere near as enjoyable

Genuinely one of the bleakest books I have ever read, yet at the same time unbelievably compelling. I found the book challenging, for the way it was written as much as the content, there was little punctuation, and long exhausting sentences, despite this it is well worth a read.
