Absolutely adored this book! Wilder and Iris were like two puzzle pieces fitting perfectly together
Wilder's grief and guilt tore at my heartstrings!
Wilder's grief and guilt tore at my heartstrings!
Out of this six book series…this one definitely made me feel like maybe I should go to church?? hehe jk
As usual with Devney's books, I managed to finish it in a go and I dont regret it!!!
Ok where to begin.
I hated Wilder in The Brawl. tbf he's unnecessarily annoying and rude to Larke. But, in this book? He redeems himself!!
It's nice to read an age gap book that's well written and doesnt feel weird. Wilder and Iris are meant for each other. They meet at the right time and they accept each other knowing that both have their own baggages. :"
But I did expect an extended epilogue (which we dont get unfortunately hhh) Now Im waiting for The Blame aka Savannah's book! I know it'll be a while (since Devney will also be releasing Blitz next year. but hopefully it's not that far away!)

Every time I read a Devney Perry romance, I declare it’s my favorite. This is one of those books again! She enchants with her stories and I never want to finish the book, oftentimes re-reading immediately to savor the story and the characters once more.
In this case the choice of characters was brilliant, in my opinion. An influencer and a science teacher! It felt like opposites in the spectrum of careers but they fit so perfectly! Iris was so incredibly curious, making thousands of questions, while Wilder answered with single words and a scowl. Eventually, their chemistry blew up and they came together, and thanks to Iris non-stop questions, he felt seen and understood, and ultimately, redeemed.
Wilder came to Calamity seeking isolation from the death of his wife. He’s a grumpy teacher but still his students appreciated him. He knows people in town but doesn’t socialize. He leads a solitary life that he appreciates until Iris happened into his life.
The baby sister of his best friend, Wilder wasn’t happy hosting her in his rustic cabin. And yet, it was the perfect place for Iris, who was a little tired from all her traveling. She had an instagram following of millions, called #thelifeofirismonroe and it chronicles her travels around the world, two months in one place. She felt unappreciated by her family and expected the same of Wilder, and to her surprise, he found her beautiful, unique, and wonderful. I felt the same about her!
I loved everything about Iris’ influencer career, found her a brilliant character, completely different from the standard. I hated the side glances and the judgy stares she got around Calamity, and loved how Wilder accepted her in all her quirks and ultimately came to love her exactly for how she is, courageous and unique.
The acceptance of a wonderful person in spite of her appearance, the living according to your mantra, those were all significant messages for me. I loved that Iris lived her life her own way and hurt that she didn’t get the acceptance and understanding she deserved from her family. I was delighted that Wilder loved all her quirks and celebrated them. And I loved the empathy he always gave her. It was an incredible feel good story with two enchanting characters, loved it!

The Brood isn't all that different from the other books in the Calamity series. That's not to say it isn't a fun time. The book was a quick, fun read, but I didn't really swoon over the couple the way I have with some of the others in the series.
This book was very insta-lust, but it took a while for that eventual snap of tension. But once they started their friends with benefits arrangement, it became clear that they were never going to be able to let each other go.
And I KNEW that Wilder wasn't as in love with his wife as everyone assumed. The way that he talked about Iris and the way that she was such a better fit for him than his wife ever was, I knew there had to be more to that story. I literally screamed when I finished the chapter where he admitted as much and confessed to asking his wife for a divorce the night of her accident.
Final thoughts...Iris has a terrible family. I don't understand how Wilder is even friends with her brother. I literally wanted to punch them all the entire book, especially when he showed up at the end of the book and went off on Iris for "seducing" Wilder.
And the epilogue...this was the first time I was surprised that the couple has kids. Sure, they talked about kids briefly but I definitely saw them traveling a bit more before starting their family (which they state had been their plan) but regardless, they're happy so it is what it is.
In the grand scheme of the series, this falls somewhere in the middle for me. It wasn't my favorite, but it wasn't me least favorite either.
