Great, great, great book. I liked The Last Dragonslayer a smidge better, but that's just because I liked the dragon story better than the quarkbeast story. That's the really great thing about this series - each book (so far, at least) is absolutely complete in itself.

Really, that's all I have to say. If you don't already know all about and love, love Jasper Fforde, you're missing out. He never produces a dud.

ok, i forgive him for the ending of the first book now, this series can live on in my memory as the awesome.

I'm pretty sure I will never not love anything Jasper Fforde writes. His YA series has a lighter touch than Thursday Next... Which just means I read them faster! Witty and charming as always.

This one has been sitting on the shelf two-thirds read since I stopped reading it aloud to the offspring. I've picked it up and finished it off today. It has the notable feature that at no point have I had to wonder who the characters are or what is going on, and what have I forgotten -- despite the number of years in between, it is all sufficiently clear. I did not even turn back one page.

And it is working for me a light and fluffy dystopia with magic and political shenanigans. One of the villains has had somewhat of a comeuppance; the other has just made a power grab and is presumably about to have theirs. I anticipate reading the last two chapters in the next ten to fifteen minutes, so I'm calling it Done!

Pros: Fforde does good over the top plots with handwaving and clever use of language. Cons: It obviously didn't hold my attention enough, and at no point have I wondered how it finishes. It was just that I got to there in the pile of books, and figured I might as well read it.

This was a fun book, as all of Mr. Fforde's books are, but not my favoriate series. I'll read the third to see how it all turns out, but can't wait for the next book in both the Shades of Grey series and the Nursery Crime series.
