This is a sequel to the Last Dragonslayer, and doesn't really stand on it's own - it would be really confusing to anyone who hasn't read The Last Dragonslayer.
I'm a huge Jasper Fforde fan, and I have read all of his books. At the end of every single one of his books, I have found myself in awe of his boundless creativity and prolific output. The Song of the Quarkbeast is the first of his books that I think he wrote too hastily. It's a darn good book, but really disappointing within the Fforde corpus - it's just not as creative or as zany or as original as his other books.
Fun sequel, glad to see Kazam's fortunes turning and learning more about the characters.
As fun to read as the others. While not laugh-out-loud funny to me it does entertain and has an interesting and responsible female main character (who still very much reminds me of Thursday). Romance raises its boring head, but isn't a big part of the story and after all, this is only to be expected of teenaged heroes. They're all very mature about it, though, and there isn't a lot of senseless heartache. There are, however, Quarkbeasts that come in six flavours, procreate by splitting into a Quarkbeast and its Antiquarkbeast.
I know, I know. I said I wasn't all that interested enough to read the second book, yet here I am writing a review for it. I was at the library the other day and I looked up from the shelf I was perusing and there it was right in front of my face, The Song of the Quarkbeast.
This one was so much more fun that the first book. We got to see more of the wizards in action and the mystery was rife. And there was a quarkbeast! The best character in the first book has returned....maybe.
Either way it was fun, funny and kept me guessing. Much better than The Last Dragonslayer.

Jasper Fforde's novels are always delightful, and The Song of the Quarkbeast is no exception.
A second outing for Jennifer Strange, and one I found just as pleasant as the first. As full of Fforde flavor as anything else he's written. My only real complaint is that you can feel him holding back because these are kids' books. I wonder what this would look like if he weren't so conscious of age group.

This book was insanely funny and stuck true to all of the original elements of the first book. It was fun seeing all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place. Jasper Fforde really knows how to put a story together. The technical design of the magical world is fascinating and innovative as well.
Another home-run by Mr. Fforde. A dazzling follow up to his first YA novel, The Last Dragon Slayer. Riveting, thought provoking, intelligent, and funny. Well worth a read, and probably one you will want to add to your own library.
