I really liked other works by the author like children of time series and a cage of souls. I found this novel pretty difficult to get through and a lot of parts pretty slow. I think it was probably because it was pretty high fantasy which I wasn't expecting and don't normally read (I thought it would be more science fiction). I found it difficult to remember all the races and planets and things (especially over audiobook). Still found it interesting and wanted to keep going but I just kept getting a bit lost (where are we, what planet are we on, who's that, what do this race of people look like etc).

I love AT's creativity when it comes to world building. In this book, he even tunes it up a notch by extending his mastery to planets, races, and the socio-political relationships between them. Shards of Earth was an interesting reading, however, the plot and some of the characters were a bit forced at times. The awe I felt was somehow diluted if compared with what I got from other books from him, Children of Time at the top of the list.
Overall interesting! Will be waiting for the second title of the trilogy to be available in paperback!

This novel ended at a strong 5, but really suffered from some poor pacing and poorly realized characters at the beggining. The book got a lot better once a few of my least favorite characters died and the plot started moving more towards the main conflict.

Too much world building, weird names, etc for me to ever get into the story, not that much happened.

Brilliant concept and world building. Occasionally found sentences hard to follow. Overall an interesting book and looking forward to the next one.
