I still remember seeing the Disney production of this film (from the 50’s!) and falling in love with the idea of travelling the seas in an impenetrable submarine; getting to see all of the wonders of the ocean as well as the far-off unchartered islands. Now that I have read the Verne original, it is interesting to compare it with the film, and vice versa. The novel is far more detailed in terms of its zoological and marine-biological jargon - from the most specific notes on a cichlid’s dorsal fin, to the exact dimensions of a reef shark. However, whilst this science-fiction novel is top-heavy on the science department, I actually found that one of the most enjoyable parts. It’s fun to read a text where the characters are insanely passionate about a subject, because it rubs off on the reader. I, in turn, want to now visit the nautical corners of the earth. Captain Nemo also provides a brilliantly memorable and enigmatic antihero, for our protagonists to face, and one whose fate is left delightfully unanswered.
