The Girls by Emma Cline

There were aspects of this that were superbly written. Cline really captures the ennui of the teenage summer, trapped between an outgrown childhood and not yet established adulthood.

The story itself was very unimaginative, copying too directly from real life while never directly acknowledging it. I'd definitely be interested to read another novel by Cline because she's clearly very talented and great at getting to the heart of complex feelings and experiences.

Cline is a talented writer, but I didn't care for the subject matter here.

I wish it wasn't quite so similar to the actual Manson murders. (Felt a little like a cop out to me.) I couldn't help but love this book anyway.
