The Last Juror

this was a book more on lines with his painted house type of book. it's about a newspaper guy, who really was a failing college kid who gets dropped into a small southern town. we follow the rise of him and the paper, in concurrance with a murder trial, and the murderer's revenge. but it's not a mystery, and the murders are kind of a back seat. good book though.

I really like the characters inthe book, and the ending had a twist.

I enjoyed this book despite myself saying I shouldn't. I honestly received this book by mistake from a seller who then sent me the correct book, but didn't want this back. I picked this up as an easy read on a flight and vacation so wasn't expecting much except a low level of entertainment. Boy was I pleasantly surprised.
This is not really focused on lawyers or courtroom drama. It's main character is the owner and editor of a local small newspaper a young man who comes in to turn things around and certainly does during his time owning the publication. Sure there is a trial, a conviction, some drama and death, but the novel is so much more fleshed out. The characters are likable, the "last juror" is endearing and lovable on her own and even more so with the family that surrounds her.
I enjoyed this novel and the turns it took. I did not see the ending coming which was a good surprise.
A delightful little read about a small town community, one man trying to make a difference and the unseen drama, hatred and other hidden motivations that cause people to do what they do... good or bad.

Not my favorite Grisham. I trudged through it because I hate quitting, but I definitely pondered it several times! This novel was way too verbose, unnecessarily so, although I did enjoy the ending.

5-Word Review:
Southern charm, endearing locals, suspenseful

Memorable Quotes
"They rush to help strangers. But they don't really trust you unless they trusted your grandfather."

"If he'd been sober he would've been killed, but drunks walk away."

"In the South, eating has little to do with hunger."

"Roughly twelve months earlier I had been living on the third floor of a fraternity house in Syracuse, New York, attending class occasionally, working hard to be a good soldier in the sexual revolution, drinking prodigious amounts of alcohol, smoking pot, sleeping until noon anytime I felt like it, and for exercise I'd hustle over to the next antiwar rally and scream at the police."

This is an older one from John Grisham, but I really enjoyed it!
