BOY OF CHAOTIC MAKING - CHARLIE N HOLMBERG
This is the third book in the Whimbrel House series and, in a delightful twist, most of the action in Boy of Chaotic Making actually takes place far away from the house in question. If you haven't read the previous two books in the series, you may want to stop reading here! Here's a synopsis:
Merritt Fernsby’s life has changed considerably since he inherited Whimbrel House. He’s engaged to Hulda Larkin, who opened his eyes to the uncanny. And he’s grown quite protective of his uncle Owein - several generations, and iterations, removed. Owein is presently inhabiting the body of a mixed-breed terrier when Merritt receives a missive from none other than Alexandrina Victoria, the Queen of England: I am interested in your dog.
As you may guess, this third book brings the main characters to England. While I don't want to give the entire plot away, I loved this development. It was eye-opening to see this series' magic system used elsewhere and the book delves into the origins of the magic too, which I really enjoyed. With this new location also comes a whole host of new characters, some friendlier than others.
Merritt and Hulda's respective development continues, as well as their incredibly sweet romance, but this book is very much about Owein. And this felt right, with the reader getting much more access to Owein and his thoughts than ever before. This was my favourite aspect of the book, as I find Owein's personality and story so endearing.
Like the books before, there's plenty of action, a mysterious threat or two and, in the case of this book, a number of premonitions to interpret. It's a book that's difficult to put down, and I loved Charlie's writing, as always. And, the best news? There's more to come and I can't wait to read the next book in this series!

Title: Boy of Chaotic Making (The Whimbrel house series book three)
Author: Charlie N Holmberg
Rating: 3.5/5 (round up to 4 for star ratings in reviews)
Pages: 318
Available on Kindle unlimited
Merrit inherits a haunted house. However, all is not as it seems. The ehimbrel House serirles is a young adult book that takes hulda, merrit, and owein down an unexpected journey and unlikely friendships.
The series and world are so beautifully written, and I was enamoured with the characters, so I was excited when book 3 came out.
It didn't disappoint. There were a few repetitive moments and I found myself getting frustrated some points. However,I enjoyed the book as a whole.
I don't think it'll end as a trilogy though as there are so many things left open that I hope is touched upon for later series.
The main storyline didn't quite sit right with my ethics, which is why i think it took longer to read. That being said it really was enjoyable (when putting my ethics to one side) and reminds us that all is not what they seem even if we expect to know the outcome to something.

The Whimbrel House series by Charlie N. Holmberg casts a spell of enchantment from the very first page. Set against the backdrop of the 1840s, a time when magic still lingered in the air, albeit waning, the story revolves around Merritt, an ordinary man thrust into an extraordinary destiny. Estranged from his family, Merritt unexpectedly inherits an enchanted home, setting in motion a journey of self-discovery and newfound connections.
Holmberg weaves a captivating tale that effortlessly transports readers into a world where magic and mystery intertwine. Through the whimsical Whimbrel House, Merritt finds himself surrounded by a cast of endearing characters who evolve from mere acquaintances to cherished companions. As they confront the challenges of dark magic and uncharted territories, readers are drawn deeper into their adventures, rooting for their triumphs and empathizing with their struggles.
Each installment in the series is a delightful escapade, leaving readers eagerly anticipating the next chapter in Merritt's magical odyssey. With two more books promised to conclude the series, fans can hardly contain their excitement for the next installment. Until then, we eagerly await the next enchanting journey that awaits within the pages of Whimbrel House

Boy of Chaotic Making is book three in the Whimbrel house series by Charlie Holmberg. In this episode. Hulda and Merrit really take a backseat to Owein, the boy who now possesses the body of a terrier. Queen Victoria, herself, has heard of Owein’s powerful magic and extends an invitation to visit her. She promises hope that her magicians can move Owein’s soul back into a human body, at which time he would marry into the royal line in order to strengthen their magic. During their trip, danger continues to find the three characters as all of them explore and strengthen their own gifts and attempt to figure out just who wants them dead this time. In my opinion… book one is definitely the strongest of the books because of the villain. The culprit in book three is disappointing, and her discovery is anti-climatic. The characters are still likable, and the light-hearted humor is engaging. It’s definitely #cottagecoreaesthetic, and it’s a fun read, though it’s short on substance. I give it a 3 out of 5 stars. It’s cute. #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booksbooksbooks #book #books #booklover #booknerdforlife #bookrecommendations #bookrecs #bookrec #bookreview #bookaddict #read #readmorebooks #readmore #reading #readingtime

The perfect sequel! I loved that this one didn't rehash too much from previous books, but built off of them and went forward.
The continuing development for established characters was well done. Hulda especially has become one of my favorites while watching her confidence grow even more and slowly but steadily open up to Merrit. I adored their relationship. I'm also always rooting for my favorite little kid/200+ year old/dog Owein and was happy (also sad) to find out more of his backstory.
This book compared to the previous two is more fast-paced and predictable in the plot/mystery department though. It felt like it was mostly written to bridge to the next one and explain some things that will be important later. I didn't mind that because I enjoyed the characters and world so much. Plus when reading a longish series you do need those building block books, imo.
I still love the magic system and wish kinetic trams, along with being able to talk to animals, were real things. I'm excited to see where the story goes in book 4!
Thank you to NetGalley, 47North & Charlie N. Holmberg for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
