Read it for (a virtual) bookclub with Anne and Lee. I had read it in the late 70s or early 80s but just remembered I liked it. This time besides the story which was lovely and revealing of the times and the folks in many ways, I recognized the beauty of the language more.

This is an important classic work room the 1930s from a woman who was not recognized in her own time. She was shunned from the Harlem Renaissance because of her portrayal of everyday people, and her choice to record the dialect of the people accurately. This is one reason it is difficult to read but it’s worth the struggle. I didn’t trust the characters, which left me feeling uneasy throughout the story. The poetic descriptions of the characters and the Florida landscape were a big highlight!
