Een fascinerend boek over de geschiedenis in Congo. Geschreven in een pakkende stijl zodat je vooral wil doorlezen. Het geeft een kijkje in de voortslepende en vooral complexe situaties waarin Congo zich bevond en nog steeds bevind.

Epic (surpassing the usual or ordinary, particularly in scope or size) is the word for this book. I knew absolutely nothing about the Congo in terms of its history, other than it was once known as the Belgian Congo, but this book filled in so very, very much. It took a long time to get through because I didn’t skim through much at all. To read about a country go through so much at the hands of many, many other countries as well as at the hands of its own people, boggled my mind. The time spent on interviews with the people was the best part for me as it helped put flesh on the facts and figures also contained within.

Prachtig, meeslepend, boek dat in detail de hele geschiedenis van Congo beschrijft van de Belgisch koloniale tijd tot de jaren ‘70. Heeft me absoluut geinteresseerd om meer over Afrika te lezen.

Impressive! The history of Congo is an interesting story of colonialism, post-colonialism and the new era of Chinese-African relations. Congo has been the African focal point of many historical turns and twists. This book does a great job summarizing what's been happening in this country that is relatively unknown considering how important it has been.

Dieses Buch war eine absolute Bereicherung, und es fällt mir schwer, diesem Wahnsinnswerk sprachlich gerecht zu werden. Vor einigen Monaten habe ich durch Zufall festgestellt, dass ich rein gar nichts über den Kongo wusste - nicht mal, dass es zwei Staaten gibt, die den Fluss Kongo im Namen tragen. Daraufhin empfahl mir ein Arbeitskollege, dessen Familie aus dem Kongo stammt, dieses Buch, das ihm selbst vieles darüber erzählt hat, wofür seine Eltern keine Worte fanden. Verständlicherweise - die Geschichte des Kongo ist voller Gewalt, schiefen Machtverhältnissen, Opportunismus, Mord, sexueller Gewalt, Rassismus und Armut. Aber es ist auch die Geschichte von unglaublicher Diversität, Lebensfreude, Hoffnung, Musik, Selbstermächtigung und dem Glauben an das Gute.
Ich habe Monate für dieses Werk gebraucht - nicht, weil es langweilig oder zu anstrengend war. Sondern weil auf den 653 Seiten (plus Anhang) so viel passiert, dass ich das oft sacken lassen und durchdenken, mich auch mal ablenken musste. Insgesamt liest das Buch sich wie ein unglaublich interessanter Roman, mit einem logisch stringenten Aufbau und viel Hintergrundwissen. Man muss wirklich kein Vorwissen haben, um hier mitgehen zu können.
Eine ganz ganz große Empfehlung!

After reading a fiction book set in Congo I decided I needed to learn more about the country. This book tells the devastating recent history of Congo.
It takes you from colonial days up to about 2010. Basic pattern followed in Congo's story: Situation is bad and then it transitions to another bad situation.
The country is extremely rich in natural resources and also extremely large. These are definite factors that have hurt Congo in maintaining stability.
I found myself struggling to get through the part of the book that focused on the colonial timeframe but once Congo became independent I found the history much more interesting. I was pretty surprised at how little I knew about Congo and what has happened in the country.
I'd recommend this book to others that are interested in learning more about Congo's history. The story is interesting and full of big changes.

Heel informatief. David van Reybrouck bespreekt Congo door de eeuwen heen. Het land heeft een complexe geschiedenis en het audioboek was een mooie manier om daar een beetje van te leren.
