Although this is fairly comprehensive and an easy and accessible read, take the information, especially the author's interpretations, with a grain of salt. He is Belgian and as much as he seems to want to be unbiased he has most certainly not escaped European paternalism. There are some blatantly racist views in this book and he often implies that the Congolese were better under Belgian rule and that it is ultimately the fault of the Congolese for their poverty. Although I often found this irritating and sometimes completely infuriating, I was able to learn a lot about the Congo without being a historian or academic. Just read with caution.

Despite the very rare factual error or elusion of important details in the book, this has to be one of the best and most readable popular histories of any country in Africa. Van Reybrouck avoids many of the underlying assumptions that privilege written European perspectives over the oral histories of local peoples. He weaves together a tight narrative, combining his family's story into the broader themes of the DRC without talking over or underplaying the views of Congolese people. A great book and a fantastic entry point into Central African history.

Historia to paskudne danie przygotowane z najlepszych składników – pisze w pewnym miejscu tej książki Van Reybrouck i nie da się chyba lepiej streścić jego imponującego, nie tylko pod względem objętości, lecz również warsztatowej sprawności dzieła. Rozmach, szczegółowość i publicystyczna pazur każą porównywać ten reportaż do kultowej Ludowej historii Stanów Zjednoczonych Zinna. Przed przeczytaniem Opowieści o zrujnowanym kraju mój zakres skojarzeniowy odnośnie Konga był więcej niż skromny: conradowski mit "jądra ciemności", mrożąca krew w żyłach historia prywatnego kraju króla Leopolda, usunięta z warszawskiego krajobrazu ulicy Lumumby... Tym bardziej ruszyła mnie historia krainy, która od z górą stu lat pozostaje "skarbnicą świata" i płaci za to nieustannie okrutną i gorzką cenę; państwa, w którym źle poszło wszystko to, co tylko pójść źle mogło (i sporo rzeczy, które powinny były wbrew wszystkiemu pójść dobrze). Podziw wzbudza talent autora do budowania rozległej narracji przy zachowaniu czułości na szczegół oraz tony empatii, którą obdarza swoich bohaterów. Najlepsza pozycja non-fiction, którą czytałem od lat. Arcydzieło.
