A really cool re-imagining of Les Mis! Love this middle grade book and the messages it holds.

This was a beautiful adaptation of Les Mis. So much thought-provoking imagery and ideas laced with humor.

This book was great!

I wouldn't exactly say that it was a five start but it was still pretty good. I loved how I had to imagine the different colored orbs and all of the exotic stands and vendors and how the city was built on water.

I really hate that Pong and Somkit were born in a prison so they have to live there until they are 13. It really pissed me off how Somkit was bullied just because he was small.

In the end Pong learned what was really important and put the Governer in his place..
You get a blessing and the first thing you do is make yourself the ruler? Absolutely not.

I didn't finish this because it needed to be returned to the library, but it wasn't bad!

I'm so glad I finally read this. It made me tear up a couple of times and I overall had a great time reading it. I liked the themes of friendship, doing the right thing and learning from your mistakes. I also liked that each character evolved through the story. All in all, it was a well-written and quite enjoyable book.

Now, should I finally read Les Miserables?

This was a slow build for me, but a lovely story over all, with just a touch of magic tying everything together.

This book was absolutely magical. You could read it as a fan of Les Miserables or without any idea that it has any connection whatsoever. It asks many of the same questions and is a beautiful reinvention of that story for a fantasy middle grade audience. My only complaint is that it is pretty relentlessly optimistic, in contrast to its inspiration. It makes sense, but I would’ve liked to see just a bit more darkness in this book about light.
