This children’s book wrecked me so much that I felt it needed to be added to my 2024 shelf.

I liked this book but not enough to read to children.

For step parents, foster families and other unconventional family make-ups.

This book is effectively a book on fostering. As it depicts a bear taking care of a young cub. Often repeating the refrain “I am not your mother but...” as the bear teaches the wolf cub various life skills.

It’s such a sweet story.

This is such a heartwarming story that teaches that just because someone is not a biological parent, does not mean they can't give a child a wonderful and loving life. The illustrations were breathtaking and I especially loved the incorporation of the circle of life.

I won't be using this for any of my read-alouds but it's great for compassionate reading, probably best suited for bedtime or small-group storytime.

Simple, but heartstring-tugging.
