 I absolutely LOVED this book and devoured it (no pun intended) in less than a day.

The story follows 18 year old Ji-Won, the eldest sister of two who are left to pick up the pieces when their father walks out on their mother for another woman. When their mother brings home her new boyfriend George - a middle-aged, racist and repugnant white man - Ji-Won begins a gruesome and bloody spiral.

On the surface this book presents as a horror, but actually when you lift the hood and get into it you realise it’s a much more complex story with layers detailing the Asian diaspora experience, misogyny, fetishisation, racism and grief.

The horror scenes were truly horrifying. I cringed and gagged delightedly as it is rare that a book manages to elicit such a reaction from me and I rooted for Ji-Won every step of the way.

This is the perfect read if you (like me) love female rage, an unreliable narrator, and a Good for Her ending.

Be warned if you cannot stomach gory stuff, there are very graphic descriptions of eyeballs. I have a strong stomach, but the one thing I don't fuck with is eyeballs. This was a very good and gory horror, and I have never been on the side of the killer, but I am in this book. Men are so creepy and gross, especially white men that have fetishes

We girls are taught from an early age that we are demonstrably inferior to our male counterparts. We are smaller, weaker, stupider. When we succeed, it’s only because men allow us to.”

We support women’s rights, and women’s wrongs; but most importantly, we support women getting therapy instead of eating eyes in the middle of the night.

This book was wild from start to finish, and I’m not sure any words I can muster would do the experience of reading this enough justice.

I’m a big fan of female rage/revenge stories, and this was certainly one of the better ones! Kim does an excellent job at helping you feel for Ji-won and everything her and her family are going through, even when you know you’re rooting for the “bad guy”.

And the descriptions for some of the gorier scenes…it had my stomach churning. I’m once again very glad to not be a meat-eater!

I read this as part of a buddy read with some incredible people;
A brilliant choice, but let’s steer clear of eyes for the next one at the very least 👀😂
