I just can’t bring myself to give this book 4 stars. It just wasn’t quite there for me. It was a good read, even though it was heartbreaking. Motherhood is so hard, and harder for some than others. As a mother this book was really tough to read at times. I guess I just wanted more from this book, more about Violet. Right at the end the very end we get perspective from the father, and then it’s just over. I’m not really a fan of sequels but I kind of think this book needs one.

Overview: I'd heard good things about this book so jumped at the chance to read it with a book club. I'd heard it was a thriller, however this was no thriller, not really. From the blurb I knew it would be about motherhood and a creepy kid, but for me I just didn't really enjoy it as much as I thought. I found the writing style hard to adjust to at first, but eventually understood it and it flowed better.

Good Points: I could connect with the motherhood issues on several levels, having a young son myself and struggled with maternal instincts. It was easy to read once I got my head around the style of writing. The post natal depression side of it was written very well.

Not so Good Points: It just wasn't what I was expected. I wanted more twists, more shocks. The ending wasn't surprising. Unfortunately, it didn't do much for me.

I do suggest checking trigger warnings before reading this if you have struggled with post natal depression or child loss.

As a mom, this book was intense. Imagine thinking your child is evil!! It raises the question is it nature or nurture that spawns sociopaths?
