Fab book with quirky and interesting main characters and an ice hockey setting, what's not to love.
Lane has no social skills, Jared is coming to the end of his career in the minors and is a bit gruff but together they're dynamite.

A 2.5 stars probably. Maybe was reading in a not reading-conducive time or mood but this was a slog for me to get through. Did not connect to Lane or Jared or the side characters and such, did not really feel the chemistry b/wn the couple, skim read a lot. I do like the author's other work tho so IDK, might've been me. Will read others in series.

2nd re-listen. Upping my rating from 4 stars to 5.

I'm doing a re-listen of all my owned audiobooks and starting the Scoring Chances again by Avon Gale I have to say that I miss her writing in sports romances and the Scoring Chances in general. Hope she'll start the writing for the series or a new one soon. But back to Breakaway.

Incredible narration from Scott R. Smith although I wish he did a pause between changing POVs, 'cos it was a bit jarring changing gears like that, but I won't take any stars from the rating for it.

Avon Gale gives us an incredible sports M/M romance with fully fledged MCs and secondary characters that enhance the story, with enough Hockey to actually make this a sports romance and not just have one of the MCs be an athlete that we never see him competing, without overwhelming the romance part and vice versa.

I loved Lane and his awkward social skills, I loved Jared and his broody ways and I loved them together, being what the other needed.
funny hopeful lighthearted medium-paced

Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Complicated
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

This felt like the longest book I've ever read. I swear it was like the last quarter was a conclusion that just didn't want to conclude. Other than that, the chemistry between Lane and Jared was good but that wasn't enough to carry this book.

2.5 stars

Fluffy, fairly low angst hockey romance.

My first from this author - overall I liked it. Interesting to read a sports story from the unglamorous end of the spectrum. Lane was weird but I found him mostly endearing.
I thought the book was well written but the pacing didn't quite work. The relationship was settled before the hockey season was completed. Being generally uninterested in hockey I found the game sections a bit boring and finding out who won the season wasn't a big page turner for me.
I will definitely read more.

*sigh*

I honestly don't know why this book has so many good reviews, and I truly mean that. It was okay...but that was about it.

Lane and Jared's getting together was rushed, their first time was rushed, everything about them was rushed, so much so that I didn't really feel them falling in love with each other. Also, I totally get that threesomes and whatnot can be hot for some people and some people don't mind them - and I honestly don't mind watching it in porn - but in romantic relationships it's just not for me, not my thing, and them talking about wanting to do a threesome every other page? Bothered me. I kept waiting for the author to include a scene because they kept talking about it so much - and I was prepared to skip it. But they never had one - or if they did, it was left off page and they just never talked about it? I dunno.

It was weird to me. I get some couples don't mind "sharing" each other in a threesome, but that's just not my thing so I don't really wan to read about that, and hearing how horny they were for other people - even though they never apparently followed through on it - and how they both didn't care that they were...eh. No thanks. Also, Lane was like "yep, I'm totes gay" but then he wouldn't have minded seeing the love of his life - Lane calls Jared this himself! - screw women??? And he didn't want to do Zoe, he said several times, his BFF, but then he'd think about her naked and want to like...pet her??? and pet her boobs??? WTF??? I don't think gay guys usually wan to do that? I mean, maybe they do, I dunno, I have no room to say otherwise, but still??? Weird. And also he got turned on by hearing his best friend fuck his roommate?? And he told Jared about it and they both got off on it?? It was just too weird for me, sorry.

Also, Lane was...from the blurb I was expecting socially awkward, sure, and someone who blurts out something they shouldn't have, but Lane was very oblivious to when he said rude/hurtful/weird things and it took him a long time to catch the uptake on some things. Also, Jared somehow being turned on by Lane saying weird as fuck things in bed? Erm...I don't buy that. I would get if he didn't mind a Lane who talked a lot in bed about like how turned on he was or just thinking of random things, but Lane would say really weird or confusing things and Jared was just like 'weird....but eh whatever it turns me on' like okay, sure.

And honestly? After about 50% I started skimming a LOT, even dialogue between Lane and Jared, because sometimes I had no interest in what they were prattling on about (Like at one point Lane wakes Jared about to talk about...magic presents, I think??? Like WTF does that even mean???) and usually the main romantic couple is ALL i want to read about. And then we had long winded scenes with other characters, which is totally fine, if they could have held my attention....and they didn't, really, and in a book about romance, my main purpose for being here is reading the romance, so I don't need ten, fifteen pages of one conversation with a secondary character.

Also, hockey doesn't interest me, but i've read a hockey m/m romance before and it was a really good book - probably because it didn't focus so heavily on hockey, but this book did. I really didn't care about all the hockey shit, and all the leagues and the teams and all that. Sorry, but that was just more I got bored of and skipped over.

This book was just "meh" to me, really. It had my attention for some parts, but for most of it I was like...when is it going to be over? Fuck, I'm only at 67%?? Nooo, I want to be doneee. When it should be "nooo, I'm at 67% I don't want to finish this books, it's too good, I don't want it to be over" but that wasn't this book for me.

Blegh.

I really enjoyed this. Lane was just adorable and Jared was pretty awesome too. I love that it was so low drama and Lane and Jared never had a big fight or misunderstanding. One of my favourite sports romances and definitely my favourite hockey romance.

Lane and Jared..
What am i going to do with you?

Lane is an awkward speak before i think young hockey player, he is described to look like an abercrombie model but he is not aware of this and he has no experience sexually speaking. He is gay.

Jared is a senior hockey player, he's in his early 30s and is very moody. He is bisexual.

So Jared and Lane meet and like each other, and fool around and they fall for each other, and they struggle with what to do with their futures and relationship.

I didn't hate this book, I didn't dislike it either BUT by the 60% mark all i could think about Everytime Lane said something was "does he have aspergers?"
I don't know much about aspergers to be honest, but i know some and that was the vibe that i got from Lane but that was never mentioned.
The reason why i thought that is, i understand awkward people, I understand not thinking before speaking, i understand being from different countries and do things in a different way but Lane was oblivious to what was right and wrong to say! People all the time said to him "you shouldn't say things like that" "when you say things like that i wanna punch you" "for saying thigs like that people hate you" and so on but he never understood, he was like "what did i said?" I just dont see a person with full mental capabilities not understanding when you offend someone. But what do i know?

My other issue was the fact that Lane spends so much time talking about threesomes with his boyfriend and "girls" and obsessed with boobs, mostly his bestfriends boobs! "I wanna pet her" and stuff like that! It was too sexual for a Gay dude.

And there was a BJ scene of Jared with OG before he hooks up with Lane, first no, I don't wanna read the MCs having any type of sex with other people, mention it, that's ok, I understand but i don't need details, and i understand that Jared is bisexual but i don't wanna read MF on my MM book!
