Very atmospheric writing. Characters dealing with “dominos falling one by one” type plot.

Wonderful storytelling. I would recommend the audiobook so you can hear the spoken native language in some dialogue scenes.

Overall a solid, atmospheric read. I would def read more from this author.
It was overall quick, but for me, slow to start. I loved the premise and loved the way the dreams people had foreshadowed the story throughout. Also enjoyed the focus on how a First Nations community dealt with an apocalyptic situation since we usually get big city, white people POVs.
I wish we had a little bit more on the motivation of the first stranger arriving at the community and how the community dealt with the aftermath. But I did enjoy the focus on community traditions and the social commentary about how first nation's/indigenous peoples are treated today.

WOW loved this book. with focus on an indigenous society and how white culture quickly breaks down their community, it is an incredible read through a dystopian lens.
the plot twist of justin scott being cannibal was such a poetic representation of how assimilation worked in the past/present - it would literally feed and eat away indigenous culture. CHILLS.
love love love

 - MOON OF THE CRUSTED SNOW is a slow build, a book that evokes the feeling of rising panic and attempts to tamp it down. The dawning horror as you realize what's going on is perfect.
- I picked this up because I saw it categorized as "speculative fiction," and really, it's only infinitesimally removed from our reality. The community in the book deals with many issues real life Native communities deal with, and the storytelling woven into the book really highlighted that as well.
- I listened to this on audio and highly recommend that if you're an audiobook person. It's read by Billy Merasty, an actor of Cree descent, and he really makes you feel like you're right there in the story.

(Really jumping in to those half-star ratings in 2021...)

To say I enjoyed this book feels strange because of its theme. It's a good book. It's got a lot to say and it says it very succinctly... maybe too succinctly.  I wish it were slightly longer: I wanted to get to know the main characters more deeply and I felt like time jumped forward too fast in Part 2. The writing is very matter-of-fact, even when its describing the POV character's strong emotions. More "in between the action" moments wouldn't have gone amiss in my opinion.
I felt that the inclusion of the Wendigo added a lot to the story, but I didn't catch on to it until I was told in the acknowledgements.
