Prince has had a crush from a distance on Danielle for ages, but she doesn’t even know who he is. An awkward chance encounter at the library (❤️) leaves them both with some feelings. And Prince, however quiet he has been about his feelings up to now, boldly declares he can make Dani fall in love with him in three dates.

Spoiler
I loved that the three dates didn’t happen as planned, but instead crumbled into more organic time together. The dates that did occur were ridiculously over-the-top, but I found them satisfying.

Dani’s friendship troubles unfold in a positive way, cutting loose a toxic friend and reconnecting with supportive buddies. Prince’s struggles with his disabled parent hit hard, and his love for his brother shines.

I think my favorite part was that when Prince and Dani’s relationship hit a rock, it wasn’t anyone’s fault. There were no grand gestures to “win” anyone back. It was self reflection and communication and patience that moved them forward.

Also, simply chock full of Michigan references.

stopppp i literally love both of them so much. they’re so perfect for each other
prince is literally the dream and what we should all be hoping for in a man
they are literally the definition of sure thing by miguel

the only reason it’s getting a 3 from me is bc YA books tend to drag too much for me. also i guess 2024 is the year jasmine guillory follows me everywhere bc she’s on the blurb for this one and jasmine, there were parts of this and parts of dani’s trauma that most certainly were not fluff.

first off, the cover has a black girl with locs on it, SOLD! the premise of this book was so so cute, the stuff of romcoms really. i particularly like how they realised that being in love with yourself first is the stepping stone to being in love with someone else but also that being in a relationship can help you grow. it's a thin line most authors don't know how to tread but she did. there are a lot of nods to black culture that i don't get because I'm not African American but nonetheless, it's an amazing book that you should read. 9/10.

For a YA romance I appreciated that this also went into more complex issues. The characters had depth and it also discussed seeing yourself in books you read.

I really am appreciating the greater representation we are starting to see in books.

This a masterly crafted book illuminating themes or rites of passage, therapy, dealing with your trauma in  healthy way and how love can be a pathway to healing. It reminded me of a YA version of Honey & Spice which I loved as well!! They are so mature in they way the evolve and navigate their relationship. I appreciated how the third act conflict was handled and how in a lot of ways the conflict was external from their relationship  and acted as opportunity for reflection and healing. I also appreciated their open communication during this period. I loved this book and ate it up, wanting more.
