Big oof! Her prose and descriptions are stunning. The reality of these situations and the politics of academia makes this book sad and scary.

2.5 stars. I was going along with this happily enough, and then it goes sideways at about 70% and recovers slightly before going even more sideways. The back 30% of this book read like entirely different book, almost like the author didn't know how to finish the book and so there's just this mess at the end. And while there were some interesting ideas percolating, I don't think they were always well-executed, and there is definitely a sense that the author thinks some of this story is much more clever and insightful than it really is.

I loved the tone of this book. The perspective and vocabulary of the main character creates such an engaging narrative. I loved that the main character is an academic in her late 50s and that her thoughts are so uniquely entertaining. I didn’t know what to expect with this book but I loved every page.
And as a side note I definitely judged the cover of this book and would’ve never picked it up had a friend not told me it was a 5 star book.

This was on track for 5 stars until page 221 of 238 when the author decided to ruin it with an unnecessary curveball.

I really dug this. The people who hated it seem either to:

1) hate character studies

2) hate the narrator (and therefore hate the book? which is crazy to me)

-or-

3) don't read so good.

hmm… entire book felt like it could’ve been summarized in a short story (which potentially could be compelling!) i found most characters pretty unlikable, the endless lamenting on being “too old,” and let us not forget the insane kidnapping and drugging scenes. just not all what i was expecting - in plot, narrative, or enjoyment

We love an unlikable woman.
