I didn’t like any of the characters in this book. Explores topics of infidelity/open relationships, rape, power dynamics, sexuality, etc. This book wrapped up in a ridiculous way, and doesn’t seem to have a point.
Ik vond het een leuk boek, vooral het begin was echt heel interessant en totaal niet wat ik had verwacht. Je zat echt precies in het hoofd van de verteller/hoofdpersoon, wat fijn was. Het ging over een powerful, iets oudere dame die professor is en een obsessie krijgt met een jongere collega. Het vreemde is dat de laatste 60 pagina's totaal niet matchten met de rest van het boek. Opeens gebeurde er heel veel en was het een en al drama en psychopathische acties, terwijl het daarvoor heel rustig was en er weinig gebeurde, maar het was toch echt intrigerend. Het was donker en heel raar, ik weet niet goed wat ik er van vond op het einde hahaha. Maar kijk als je een raar boek wil lezen is deze wel echt een aanrader. Al bij al wel een positieve, leuke, maar vooral een bizarre leeservaring. Denk dat ik het beter had gevonden als het einde beetje meer in lijn was met het begin/midden.
I made it a goal to try and read more literary fiction this year, but this is making me rethink that goal bc this entire experience was just... unpleasant????? Very very much not the book for me.

This book is both icky and intriguing. I had so many moments where I felt conflicted reading this but I couldn't stop- I needed to know if this was going to have a "happy ending" or end up bursting into flames (joke intended). It was interesting to hear a different perspective in a story like this. And it was nice to hear from the perspective of the woman behind "the man." And that she's an extremely flawed and sometimes dangerous.
when I die bury me in campus novels. This was super super good and I think managed to complicate some dominant social narratives in interesting ways, especially through the narrator’s pov. Brilliant ending. I also love a campus novel that is not mired in the “drudgery” of the professoriate, a trope that’s getting old in both my reading material and my real life. I would read 10 more books by this author.
this was such a fascinating read and such an intense look into what it feels like to be an aging woman who is battling against her worth and her desires. apparently julia may jones, the author, is also a playwright and that makes white a bit of sense. this read very much like a play that was just expanded into a novel, and i loved it so much for that.
