Really special little book. The audio sounded like a novel in verse. Very heartwarming and honest account of growing across the seascape of immigrant communities in Queens.

This book is supposed to be an ode to brown girls, and while it did feel like that, it also felt a bit lofty at times. The author sure packed a lot of brown girl identities and cultures into one book. The writing style wasn’t really for me: First person plural, and the chapters seemed more like vignettes than chapters of a novel imo. I identified with a lot of the experiences detailed in this book and felt emotional when I could relate; but I felt my focus drifting during the parts I didn’t personally relate to.

this book is okay if you can ignore the antiblackness and the fact that asian, indigenous, and south american people are grouped in w black people which I find very strange. just throughout this whole book I had this feeling of not truly being able to relate to it since I know the author didn’t GENUINELY have my experiences in mind while writing it. Besides that the book is enjoyable and does a nice job at describing the world the characters live in.
