I love Sarah Dessen so freaking much. When I saw this book was being adapted into a new Netflix movie, I knew I wanted to reread it. Dessen is SO GIFTED at developing complex characters. Auden navigating her relationships with both of her parents is what makes this book so heart-breakingly beautiful. I honestly could care less about her romance with Eli. Her development is incredible! I can’t wait to see the movie, I hope it does the book justice!

For people who live on the beach, they don’t spend enough time at the beach. This book was very … vanilla. It was an easy read but left you wanting more from it. I really only read it because of the Netflix movie coming out.

3.25 stars? perhaps. I don't really know. And, for my first Sarah Dessen book, it was kind of underwhelming.
I mean, the writing was nice.
But the characters were... flat. And insomnia? Really? It didn't really feel like insomnia. More like, I don't want to sleep. I don't know. All the characters were all the same for me, besides Heidi which I really liked. But Auden, the main character, she was only okay. And Eli... he was nice but like so many other characters in other books. And, honestly, the book spent more time on other topics than the love story between Eli and Auden. And, yeah, if I wanted to read a friendship and family-oriented book, I would have loved this one. It's just that the premise promised a big romance and we had, like, 10? scenes with Eli. IN THE WHOLE BOOK.
Yeah... Overall, okay. I don't think I'm going to pick another book from Sarah Dessen... :((
