I decided to reread this book because the movie is coming out later this week on netflix. I give Sarah Dessen's books a lot of credit for defining the way I read now, because back when I was 11/12 I really didn't read as much as I used to because I felt like I was at an awkward age where I didn't necessarily know what I was meant to be reading. Then I started reading Sarah Dessen and transitioned into the world of YA. I read and reread her books for the entirety of my teen years and loved them all every time. But I haven't touched them in a few years because I don't really read YA anymore and I didn't want to taint what was once very special to me. That, however, did not happen.
I truly loved reading this even now. The setting is so dreamy and exactly what a person wishes their summers could have been like and the characters always have such realistic arcs that you root for. She also always writes very endearing love interests. So, yeah, this holds up and I am very excited to watch the movie later this week.

Don't judge a book by its title has never been truer than with this YA read. The writing has weight to it, with subtle characters, nuances, and surprisingly, given the cover, a substantive plot. It makes me happy when I stumble upon a good book and this one is just perfect for high school girls.
Using academic success to find comfort from her family and socially barren life, Auden has spent her life being the perfect child. Now with the summer before college looming with her controlling, perfect, though emotionally-remote mother driving her crazy, Auden decides to accept the offer from her dad and stepmom to spend the summer with them and their new baby at their home on the beach.
During this summer Auden is thrown together with kids her own age and finds out what she missed in depriving herself of a childhood. As she is befriended she embarks on a quest of "do overs:" understanding the strength of failure, learning to ride a bike, and value of friends.
Dessen has been described as doing a "great job delicately depicting teen girls in turmoil," but that leaves out a really important part - her characters are likable. No adult angst has been seeped into this story and for once you don't think, "geez these kids (and probably the author) need therapy badly." Refreshingly, the author doesn't need the crutch of extreme trauma and afflicted malaise to write a great story.

This wasn't bad, it was just fine. I hope that the Netflix adaptation is better

Cute Comfort read. I thought it was a little too long and a little repetitive. But the characters were very cute and the story was easy to follow.
