This was really a fun, easy read! I am unabashedly a horror weenie (some of the descriptions in the book had me noping out) but I appreciate the overview of some of the classics of the canon and why they're classics. The writing was engaging, funny, and although I won't watch any of the movies, I at least know some more trivia.

This is exactly my kind of book. I just want about 4 more of these to cover other big movies. I would read this about other mediums too, like games. It did actually make me chuckle a couple times.
When I saw this on NPR's Books We Love list for 2024, I knew I had to check it out. I worked in a video store in the 80s, and I love love love all varieties of horror. Having people in my life who are interested but can't view these movies, this book offers SO much for these folks. From story summaries to cultural impacts, Hughes goes through the finer points of each era of the genre. It was really fun as an audiobook, too. Key highlight: This is a great reference for writers (of the horror genre or otherwise) because Hughes discusses common tropes and other story craft all the way through.

Exactly what it says it does: summarizes classic horror movies for people like me too scared to watch them.
I like the cultural context provided in between the movies and eras.
At times it veers towards dryness, but…I mean, it’s horror for weenies, and I’m a weenie, what other direction can “toning down horror” go in?

“BUT YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY AVOID [Hereditary] IF: Let's be honest. if you're reading this book Hereditary is too scary for you. It's very nearly too scary for me, and this is my job.”
This book was so much fun! As a fan of horror, I have seen a good amount scary movies. In this “Outsider’s Guide”, Hughes takes readers through landmark movies in the genre highlighting what makes them important, classic tropes, and fun trivia. This book is a great way for fans of horror movies to get a good refresher on some great films, and non-horror fans to learn about the movies they don’t want to watch. Hughes has definitely added some movies to my TBW including The Wicker Man, The Fly, and The Poltergeist. I will say that in this book, Hughes spoils dozens of movies, so reader beware…
