As a certified Weenie, this book really has everything. Sharp and clever jokes, appropriate warnings for films you've heard of (but definitely haven't seen), and one hell of a stack of further reading recommendations, if you're into that sort of thing. It made me want to get together a list of horror films that seemed bearable for me to watch, so I could actually watch them. It's hefty, so take your time if you can. I borrowed this from my library and burned through it in chunks. I'd definitely read it again.

As someone who devours horror books but steers clear of horror movies, Horror for Weenies felt like it was written just for me. Hughes delivers a witty, engaging exploration of horror cinema that is both accessible and informative, offering detailed yet concise plot summaries sprinkled with sardonic humor.
Beyond the film breakdowns, I appreciated the broader discussion of horror trends and how they reflect cultural anxieties—reminiscent of Dark Carnival in its analysis. Hughes makes a compelling case for why these films matter, and in some instances, even convinced me to step outside my comfort zone and add a few titles to my watchlist.
While this book is perfect for those who prefer their horror secondhand, longtime fans of the genre might also enjoy revisiting these films through Hughes’s sharp and entertaining commentary.
