Been waiting for a book/project like this for ages 😭 I'm big into movies and pop culture but horror has always been my blindspot because I scare incredibly easily. (I couldn't even go on the Haunted Mansion without being scared until I was an adult!)

The only 2 of these I have managed to see because theyre the least gorey are Psycho and The Shining and those summaries were accurate, so I trust the rest of the book. My only gripe with this book was that a good chunk of the jokes were like gen z-ish jokes/slang which meant a lot was co-opted AAVE jokes/slang. Odd choice? The jokes pop-up at the most intense parts of summaries usually and are predictable so the humor aspect Just seems to be there to cool the tension for the "weenies".

TLDR: Useful book, it does leave out Friday the 13th, Alien, and Predator though which is weird since theyre such huge franchises. There needs to be a Part 2 to this please, just for this niche group of weenies that need it.

This was a really great start for someone interested in dipping their toes into horror films! I liked the format that helped me to decide to stop before the summary and watch the movies, or to tell me enough about them to pick out ones to watch after knowing what happens. And I definitely added several books to my Want To Read based on the "read this instead" recommendations.

I absolutely loved this book! Its mere existence is so perfect for me, I only wish it had come out sooner because I have already seen or read plot summaries to most of the movies explored. Even so, I got a lot out of this book. The layout was perfect, the summaries were much more detailed than what I’m used to, and the section highlighting why the movies mattered always hit for me.

I do wish there was a section for honorable mentions. The author alludes to some that didn’t make the cut and maybe it wouldn’t do them justice to water them down with an abbreviated version but I would’ve personally liked it since (as previously stated) I knew most of the films in the book already. I would’ve liked to hear about some more “underground” films.

The introduction really resonated with me. I was scarred by horror movies as a child and pretty much ignored/avoided their existence most of my life but I’m surrounded by horror fans so I get peer pressured to watch from time to time. Despite cowering behind a blanket for most of the movies, I found myself intrigued by the stories and started getting more into horror fiction. It wasn’t until recent years I’ve started really watching (and even then I will cower in anticipation of a jump scare) but it’s been worth it because some of the horror that’s come out in recent years has been amazing!

I would definitely like to read more from this author and would love to see this book spawn more like it — maybe even a whole series!

A great review and recap of 25 of the most noteworthy and iconic horror films from Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960) to Ari Aster’s Hereditary (2018). Hughes, a reformed horror “weenie” who found her love of the film genre by first reading horror books, gives summaries of what happens in each film, why it matters, and fun facts. She provides reading recommendations for each film if you’re too afraid to watch them. In between covering each film, there are short sections on popular horror tropes and subgenres. Beware: this book contains spoilers!
