Kidnapping and parent death happen early in the book.

I am not the target audience, so this is my very subjective thoughts as an adult reading for their own enjoyment

The writing is pretty young middle grade. I really didn’t care for the writing style in general even outside of that. It’s very repetitive. The plot wasn’t interesting enough for me to push through, especially knowing this is a series and according to others’ reviews, apparently doesn’t come to a full conclusion in this first book.

This would be a great read for a junior high school kid, although it's rather dark. I found that the story to be dragging, and a bit repetitive, but then again, I am not the intended audience.

This is a great MG sci fi / fantasy series to start, especially for MG readers who may struggle with the complex world building of Harry Potter or Nevermoor. The perspective shifts between all three siblings, so there's a good balance of female v. male POV. I wish we had gotten more from Kate or Ms. Morales, but since the book mostly revolves around the kids' journey, I understand why we didn't.
Recommend for readers who enjoy alternate worlds theory, traveling between dimensions, deciphering code, etc. It would also make a great family read aloud.
TW for parent death, parent missing, divorce, and some general mentions of domestic violence.
