A breathtaking, tear-jerking, beautiful story. I was immersed in this story from start to finish. It is not the destination, but it was the journey she endured. She took life by the reigns and made with it as she could. The book ended with a shock factor, which was truly unexpected. Read and fall into the life of Evelyn Hugo, who was more than her body, acting, but her heart. It was a very appealing must-read.

I have to be very honest.  I started this book with the paperback copy and I couldn't get into it. It was slow-paced and I abandoned it for another book. This was last year. 

I'm happy to say I came back and finished the book. Clearly. Just in audio book format. I REALLY loved the audio book. I adored the narrators and I was very endeared with the voice of Evelyn. It in a way reminded me of my nanny's voice. The way words would be inflected and the way the sassy attitude comes out in tone of voice. 

I always loved the idea of this book and I'm glad I circled back to it sometime later. I found the old Hollywood glamour fun and exciting. I would think I knew where it was going and then be wrong. Which I appreciate in a book. Though about halfway through I did figure it all out. 

While I didn't particularly connect with any one character, I found myself being drawn to almost all of them. Except Don. Iykyk. 

I found times where the book was quite sad and I found times where I was laughing to myself. It was such a descriptive book that I really felt immersed into the world of Evelyn Hugo. I felt like I could have been at an Oscars event or on the red carpet or being a fan seeing her in an ice cream shop.

I thought her love for her friends and lovers was so genuine even though she could sometimes be going astray and I would find myself thinking "Oh my god Evelyn. Don't do that." It was interesting that Evelyn would go to the lengths she did to be with her one true love. 

I fiercely recommend this book. It is well worth the hype and you won't regret it. While I do recommend it in audio book form, I think however you prefer to partake you won't be disappointed.

great book, very interesting. i love the style of writing interspersed with relevant news articles. i think evelyn is very complex and real. i wish monique's story had more presence throughout the book, although i understand the focus was primarily evelyn.

my only other qualm was that celia's characterization seemed to shift weirdly during their second relationship, maybe that's just me

I cried at the end. Every character is so bloody unlikeable, the relationships quite toxic, and yet you kind of can’t help but root for some of them. 

I don’t think this is actually that amazing of a book, it’s certainly not life changing. But the ending still got me and it sucked me in, in that way watching reality tv does. 

The way I feel about this book in the moments after finishing it feel like an oxymoron, I feel emotional yet all I’ve done is complain about it. I think it’s the sort of book I’ll think of occasionally but never plan on re-reading.

I also hated the first 3ish chapters of this, the initial set up was incredibly boring.

bury your gays world record. damn. not one of those bitches made it out alive

the story was captivating, the characters were well-rounded and complicated, and the dual timelines were well-executed. she managed to make me care for Monique even though we spent significantly less time in the present. i liked the way the husbands were split up into their own little segments and the little qualifiers before each of their names. 

i really really really liked it until the last maybe 100 pages—

bury your gays pops up to say hello

—when i started liking it marginally less. so if i’m being really really honest with myself it might be more like 4.5 or maybe even 4 stars. but the story and characters were so well-crafted that i feel compelled to give it a 5. i’ll def pick up another TJR book.
