I really, really love when a book just makes me feel all the feelings. And The Write Place 100% hit it all. I was smiling, laughing, giddy, blushing, swooning, crying, kicking my feet, all of the feels. Mac and Daniel are some of the sweetest, genuine characters I have ever read and I am so in love with them. There are so many aspects of this book having an English teacher and a writer that truly reminded me of why I always loved English in school, have an English degree myself, and just where the root of my love for reading comes from for me. I cannot tell you how long it’s been since I’ve truly related so much to a book. Even Mac dealing with grief, not a sibling for me but a very close grandparent and just recently going through an anniversary of that death, how hard that reminder can be. Seeing them everywhere but not seeing them. I felt so seen. I cannot say enough good things about this. Definitely a top read for me this month, and felt so right to read this with the back to school time of year and headed into fall. Comfy and cozy autumn vibes perfect for this time of year.

Fun and fairly well written. Committed two grave romance novel sins (in my opinion): 1. Going to great lengths to let you know that even though this is a romance novel the author is, in fact, a great lover of high brow literature too. So am I, hun, but I don’t need to justify my consumption of low brow literature by bragging about the prize winners I read.
2. Saying something is “like in a romance novel”. For the love of all things bookish, I KNOW. I am aware there will be classic tropes in a romance novel. When they discover there is only one bed in the last room available (or insert other micro trope here), DO NOT have your character reference this being a trope. Just ENJOY IT.

cute rom-com, nothing more to say *shrugs shoulder*
This book was a delight! I love finding a new author and The Write Place is exactly what you hope for in a debut. This story is about Mac, a high school English teacher who must accommodate a famous writer in her classroom for several weeks as he attempts to pen his next great novel. Unbeknownst to her department chair (and the rest of the school), Mac and Daniel have met before, and there is definitely chemistry between them. Put in an awkward place, Mac has to teach in front of Daniel every day and pretend like nothing’s happened, but it doesn’t take long for her to realize that Mr. Evans is very hard to ignore.
As a former teacher myself, this book hit close to home as it gives a very realistic perspective of what it’s like to be a teacher. The school characters are believable and the students are authentic representations of real high school students. While reading, I could tell that Samberts writes from her own teaching experience as she writes Mac’s lessons with love and forethought (the short story lesson with Daniel made me SWOON!). It is clear that Mac is a great teacher and truly cares for her classes much like I suspect Samberts does with her own.
But enough about the school atmosphere, we’re here for a romance! The plotting is top notch and if you like a hero that falls hard and falls first, Daniel will be your favorite MMC. Although it’s the playful banter that initially draws Daniel (or should I say Evan?) to Mac, it’s seeing her everyday at work in a place that she loves, that makes him more and more enamored with her. This is the best kind of love story because the romance is built not only on sexual attraction, but on the whole character. It makes those moments between Daniel and Mac that much sweeter. Samberts gives a playful nod to the infamous “only one bed” trope and The Write Place is an open door romance. The intimacy shared between Mac and Daniel is balanced perfectly with the storytelling and makes their classroom and public interactions even sweeter.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes an engaging story with the perfect balance of heart and romance. I also think it would be a great introduction to “a little spice” for someone new to the genre. I received this advanced copy from the author as a giveaway, but was not influenced to write this review in any way. All opinions are my own.

Mackenzie “Mac” Milcrest is a high school English teacher along with her best friend Jenny. Daniel Evans is a world famous writer who is currently suffering from writers block. One night, Jenny drags Mac out to a local bar and she meets Daniel, but she is unaware of who Daniel actually is until she sees him again in her school building. Apparently, Daniel is working on a new book related to the teaching profession and the head of the English department recommended he observe “Miss Mac” to help him get more clarity. Naturally, she is furious when she finds out who he really is, but can she see past this and find a way for them to work together to grow in their own professions?
This book was such a sweet, slow burning romcom with a little spice that tugged at my heartstrings. I absolutely loved all of the characters and the relationships between them. Jenny was my favorite because she’s hilarious and her love for her best friend, Mac, was heartwarming. This was the author’s debut novel and I absolutely loved it! I can’t wait for the next book in the series!
Thank you so much to the author, Allie Samberts, for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Note: you can pre-order now or purchase on the pub date (4/10/23)
