This is a beautifully written book but epically depressing. I don't understand the reviews that called it tragi-comic, it read as purely tragic to me. I'd give it more stars if I hadn't come out of it so miserable, I'd give it fewer stars if I were awarding them based on how much I enjoyed reading the book.

I was asked several times if this book was good while I was reading it, and honestly for most of it I couldn't answer, I wasn't even sure I even liked it until the last 25%. It started out strange and bounced back and forth between parts that were unbearably good, parts that were just odd, and parts that just drug on. When you come to the end however it all just comes together somehow and becomes a good book.

Beautifully written, i’ve never underlined and used a highlighter in a fiction book before until reading this. From the synopsis this book was nothing like I was expecting. It made my heart ache, afew tears came at one point. I’d recommend!

I loved and hated this book at the same time. It frustrated me in the beginning and I almost put it down but I became so caught up in the story that I couldn't let it go. I'm glad I kept reading because it was a good story, even though it repeatedly broke my heart.

ספר נפלא.
רומן היסטורי-בדיוני, המתחיל לפני קום המדינה ומסתיים עשרות שנים לאחר מכן. הספר מחולק לשלושה חלקים: לפני, בזמן ואחרי (וכן אפילוג).
הספר מתחיל מתיאור חברותם של שניים: מרקוביץ' אדם ללא כריזמה ובלתי-זכיר לחלוטין ופיינברג, בעל קול רועם שפם מסולסל המתחילה כאשר מרקוביץ' מציל פעמיים את חייו של פיינברג, משם הם יצאו למסע מעבר לים בשליחות "הארגון" כדי להנשא לנשים יהודיות בחו"ל (ובכך לאפשר את עלייתם ארצה) ולהתיר את נישואיהם כאן בארץ. מכאן תסתעף העלילה ובאות גם יתר הדמויות המרכזיות בספר, סוניה אשתו של פיינברג, בלה שלה נישא מרקוביץ' ואיתם אפריים סגן מפקד הארגון והשוחט ואשתו.
העלילה נודדת בין המושבה לעיר, בין ישראל וחו"ל, בין מלחמה ושלום (והטראומות שנמשכות) בין אהבה ושנאה, בין בני זוג, בינם ובין האדמה, יחסי הורים וילדים ועוד ועוד. הדמויות עוברות שינויים מטלטלים וגם אני מצאתי את עצמי "מטולטל" שוב ושוב.
הסגנון של הספר הוא היפר ראליסטי-פנטסטי (חישוב על ספריו של מאיר שליו על החלקים הפנטסטיים שבהם ותעלו דרגה). דיונים, שעד אתה איני מבין איך צלחתי, ברטיבות הואגינה של הנשים השונות בספר; אישה שריחה תמידית ריח תפוזים; שפמו של פיינברג שמשתנה לפי מצב רוחו; נשים בעלות עיניים דומות הקוראות זו את מחשבותיה של האחרת וכו' - ועם זאת התיאורים כואבים, רגישים ומציאותיים מאוד.
באחד הקטעים היפים בספר עולה השוואה בין אי-אהבתה של אישה לבעלה למערכת היחסים שבין היהודים לארץ ישראל (כיצד היא מסרבת לחיזוריהם ומענישה אותם שוב ושוב והם נאחזים בשולי כותנתה בתקווה שיום אחד תשיב להם אהבה ותראה אותם באהבתם).
נהניתי מכל רגע והצטערתי להפרד ממנו.

Une belle découverte : un roman fresque passionnant qu évoque souvent le conte (on y retrouve une forme de "réalisme magique") et une très belle écriture qui sublime des personnages haut en couleurs.
