4.5 stars!! essential California reading, essential America reading. Devastating and anger-inducing. I loved the way it feels like multiple short stories and yet is an all encompassing saga of a journey.

“The people in flight from the terror behind—strange things happen to them, some bitterly cruel and some so beautiful that the faith is refired forever.”

Spurred by a reading challenge in which I am participating, I finally read The Grapes of Wrath. It is a very hertbreaking time and story. My favorite character was Ma Joad. She was a strong woman whose family was important to her. She did her best to take care of them and keep them together. Another great aspect of the story was how the Joads were kind and humane in spite of the dehumanizing conditions and how they were treated as something less than workhorses by some of the other people.
