I’m vacillating between 3 and 4 stars, so I’m going with the lower rating simply because this qualifies, in my estimation, as a “mass paperback” story. Meaning, it’s straightforwardly written (no flowery language here); sparse on emotions; filled with short, punchy chapters; and designed to propel you across the finish line with a breathless, “oh my gosh, that was quite a ride!” Doesn’t mean the book was bad or unenjoyable; I liked this Grisham novel about as much as I liked “Runaway Jury,” although I think the film adaptation of RJ is superior to its source material (maybe because of John Cusack?). But I digress. I liked Mitch (although him cheating on his wife Abby and getting away with lying about it was a sore spot for me) and I had to know how he was going to get himself out of “The Firm.” And now I really wanna go watch the movie, to see if it too is better than the book.
Great story, confused on somethings and I could have done without the casual racism.
With only my first book for Mr. Grisham, now i get the hype and i am on board.
With graduating Harvard and being a top of his class, athletic and charismatic, all the top law firm in the country are throwing their employment offer under Mr. McDecree feet.
A law firm in Memphis that he never heard about before with a zero turn over rate, offers him an irresistible offer with benefits that exceed any other offer in the country and exceeds his imagination, he signed with them and mover to memphis with his beautiful wife to start his dream job.
Within months, he started to notice things that doesn’t fit a normal law firm, excessive security, frequent unexplained accidents, long list of restrictions and few encounters, which makes him on edge, and slowly the secrets start to emerge and the story start to unfold.
The balance between action and drama was great, the characters are incredible, and the detailed descriptions for the scenes was outstanding, although at some points, it was dragging a bit, but getting picked up afterwards.
I am really happy that this is my start for Mr. Grisham collection and i cannot wait for the next one.

One of the first "adult" books I read as a young teenager. I found it shocking and scandalous at the time. Decent suspense, decent scenario, but all the Grisham I read after was downhill.
Engagingly written, but I'd seen the movie, and the book follows the film almost exactly (or vice versa I guess). I think what makes thrillers entertaining is not knowing what will happen next, so I stopped.
Long read but pretty much everything felt relevant. Complex story with lots of small details you actually have to pay attention to. Overall good book!

Not every book I read has to be profound or life-changing. I call the remainder mind-candy. Mind-candy is good for you, it doesn't fatten. Grisham's novels fall into this category.
