A wonderful book. I knew a little about the Tamil wars but this book gave me so much more information. The terrible thing is that the desire for supremacy and power goes on still. All over the world people are killing and being killed because of some perceived grievances.
This book looked at the subject of racism justified by those with racist ideas as their right to freedom of speech without acknowledging the freedom of those with opposing thoughts and beliefs. The way that a small germ of racist thought escalates into death, destruction and misery.
The characters each have their own story to tell and makes the reader realise that everyone we meet has their own individual story if only we all took the time to share and listen.
Sadly racism appears to be rearing its ugly head more and more nowadays and is inflamed by the ultra conservative and governments not prepared to stand up and stamp it out.

Well deserving of many awards! I loved the many voices and complex characters with their diverse stories and complex emotional responses. The Tamal battle for freedom of identity is an excellent parallel to the multiculturalism in modern Australia. White Anglo-Saxon protestant Australia has much to learn from the many cultures now enriching our diverse nation. It should be on the national reading curriculum!

I loved so many things about this book, I just feel like it could have been executed a bit better. This was not Shankari Chandran’s best writing in my opinion and having read her other works it doesn’t quite hit the spot for me. Regardless, she knows how to hit me with an ending that brings tears to my eyes.

Beautifully written. I found it to be quite the eyeopener, especially regarding the ways of people from Sri Lanka. I found the authors use of fact, entwined with ficticious prose captivating and engaging.
I felt the book delved into some very triggering topics of our current time, with the author masterfully conveying her own thoughts and knowledge cleverly.
I particulary liked the depth given to each character. Every character (including the seemingly bad) had thier own experiences and history, leading them to their own present day perceptions, actions and reactions.
I originally gave this book 4 stars but as I recall the story, while trying to type this review, I find myself acknowledging the true depth of perception and integrity the author holds.
I look forward to future books from this author.

A critically important book for the understanding of racism in Australia, the experiences of immigrants, the racial violence in Australia and Sri Lanka, and - in the author's note for those who don't make the connections themselves - the parallels with treatment of aboriginal history and people by white Australia, past and present, and the necessary impacts of that on future generations.
