I'm going to start with a shocker: I'd never actually read Robert Louis Stevenson's classic before.

Oh, I was familiar with the story - who isn't? - but as for actually reading the novel? Nope.

Indeed, the closest I had ever come was screen adaptations of it, with The Muppets version in particular springing to mind! As such, I never really had the inclination to go to the source material - after all, I've seen it, so why read it?

However, I finally got round to actually doing so in late 2013 and, you know what? I did actually quite enjoy it!

I'm aware that it started the whole buried treasure/peg-legged Pirates genre of stories, and now I know why :)

THIS BOOK IS BORING OH MY GOD. I bought this (cuz the cover looked cool) because I love treasure planet, and I really wanted To read the original story. I think I’m gonna give it another shot but my god that first read it was not fun. Like how do you make a pirate adventure boring D:

This was so fun! And quick. I had this one on my phone (free classics!), and it fit the shorter, less focused reading sessions that I usually have for phone books. I have seen Muppet Treasure Island at least 5 times, but I still forgot enough/there was enough deviation that this was exciting to read, although I still heard Long John Silver as Tim Curry the whole time.
I loved the pace and plot points of Treasure Island. The story didn't turn wildly on unexpected twists, but it wasn't predictable like a lot of modern easier-reading fiction. One of the facets of culture pieces that I've been paying attention to more lately is how much they know what they are. I.e. if it's a shallow soapy drama and has unrealistic plot points or exaggerated characters, that's often better than if they do a half-assed job of trying to cover up plot holes or have a contrived episode adding a dissonant facet to someone's character. Treasure Island did a great job of not trying to accomplish too much, with a chaotic protagonist who's a little flat, and really only developing the character of Long John, clearly the most interesting, beyond surface level. Definitely a fun read and a deserved classic in my opinion.
