A Deadly Education

Naomi Novik

3.94 AVERAGE

It’s like Harry Potter, but they are juniors, not 11, and hogwarts is the house from Encanto but it wants to kill all of the students, and often succeeds.

I liked this a lot. The author really set the description of the school well in the creep factor- the endless black ceilings where monsters creep is great. I also love that everything felt justified- there are no teachers or saviors. Everything is a death trap. The rich kids have no clue how privileged they really are. The punishment for turning in work late is you may get your fingers chopped off. Even the cafeteria has a high mortality rate. I liked the characters a lot- I loved how El finally made a couple of friends. I even liked the Hermionie esque befriending of Chloe.

Immediately borrowed book 2.

It was ok! Had to push myself to get through it. I liked the sarcasm and found the world building interesting but the story didn't grab me. A lot of text was spent on explanations that didn't push the plot forward.

Not bad, just a bit flat for me. I will continue with the series as I really like the world Novik created, I just found our fmc to be a bit challenging to root for.

DID NOT FINISH

I’ve tried this book 3 or 4 times from the beginning and I say I’m going to get back to it and try again.
I will not.
