I started reading Koontz novels when I was still in elementary school, and this one was always one of my favorites. Alas, I probably should have allowed it to be a fond memory, because this most recent reread spoiled those memories.
Because as an adult, what I realize is that, while Koontz may be a decent storyteller, he's awful at dialogue. It was cringe worthy in more than a few places.

My first and most likely last Koontz. The military knight in shining armor who rescues the beautiful virgin who doesn’t know she’s beautiful? Please, the dog who can read is more realistic.

Dean Koontz has given the world a novel about the power of man's bond with dogs. In the same pages, he's given us a novel about what happens when man outcasts each other. The great thing about this book is that Koontz manages to make the 'evil' creature sympathetic, just as he makes you root for the good. It is not an easy task, and Koontz does it wonderfully. He also gives you twists to navigate that make you feel fully involved in the story and the characters.
Really liked this book. Some odd angles to characters who were in and out of the story. Overall, a good read (listen/audio).
