I am a huge fan of Patrick Ness and I was hoping for greatness with this book. It was a weird one (as most of his books are) but not entirely in a bad way, and it mostly lived up to my expectations.
I had no idea what this was going to be about, and what didn't help were the slightly confusing chapter descriptions at the beginning of a chapter. The descriptions had nothing to do with what I was reading, but after a few chapters I realised what was going on. It was another story happening/being described inside this story. If that's confusing for you well I'm sorry I can't help you. You just have to read the book to understand it for yourself.
It was such an original idea, but Patrick Ness made a fantasy story of immortals and blue glowing eyed people sound boring in comparison to Mike's story. Mikey and his friends are "normal", they aren't the teenagers off fighting vampires or immortals but even so I found myself really connecting with them.
This wasn't one of his best books, but it's hard to beat The Chaos Walking series or A Monster Calls. Even so, it's still a beautifully written book and I recommend you read it.
On a side note, a fact I found out about Patrick Ness is that he really likes rhinoceroses and he puts them in every book he writes. So of course I was looking out for the mention and I found it. If you're wondering it was page 309.

This is delightful. It's the story that happens to the kids that AREN'T saving the world from the latest apocalypse.

This is an amazing book! I loved it with my whole heart and I would definitely read it again. It's been a while, but I loved seeing the ordinary side of an extraordinary world.

This book was not at all what I was expecting. I actually found most of this book to be quite boring. I would have much preferred to read a book for the Indie kids POV. This book to me just felt like I was missing out on something. I wanted to know more in depth what was happening with the blue light, not whether or not Mikey got the date he wanted to prom.
My biggest issue was it felt like there was no real story, we were just literally following 4 teenagers hoping that they get to graduation. Most of the books I have read by Patrick Ness I really enjoy, so I had high hopes for this book, and while the writing was amazing, the story its self was just incredibly boring.
All in all I am disappointed with how this book turned out. I still think the plot was an interesting idea, but in this instance was not done in the best way possible.

You’ve got your Katniss, your Tris, and countless of other chosen one heroines/heroes to last a lifetime (probably), and whilst it is interesting to read the struggles and the challenges of our chosen one, sometime you wonder what it would be like to be those living on the sidelines, right? What it would be like to be Primrose, or some random ass people living on the outskirts of all the interesting events happening in the story? Oh, you don’t? Well neither do I, well until I read the premise of this book.
I was very excited upon finding this book, I was curious about the take on those who are not the chosen one. And to be honest, it was interesting, to some extent. It was interesting and enjoyable until I realised that Mikey is a constant complainer and I lost count at how many times I’ve rolled my eyes out of boredom.
I would like to be less judgemental and mean towards the book, because I still maintain my opinion about the interesting premise but after awhile this just feels like a whole book of teenagers complaining. Ugh! I don’t mean to take lightly what sort of depression or mental illness that Mickey is going through, it’s just I feel like I’ve waste a good portion of my two days reading about nothing. As the story ends, I can’t help but wonder what was the whole entire story about.
