I found this book just plain fascinating. I really don't know much about Judaism and had never even heard of the Hasidic sect, and all of that was so interesting to learn about. The two main characters, Reuven and Danny, were gifted boys that took their education seriously -- and I loved seeing them grow and shine. This book leaves you with a lot to think about in terms of friendship, the value (and harm) of silence, and father/son relationships. It was one I wanted to talk about after reading -- glad it was a book club book so I could do just that!
This book was very moving. I was so drawn into the story that I could hardly set it down. The story was so deep with Jewish history and study that I seriously considered getting a Cliff Notes to help me understand the complexities. I highly recommend this book.
4/5 Stars
I have finally finished this book! I have finally finished a book. I listened to this on audiobook, and it was the way to go even if I eventually had to get a physical copy for school. I enjoyed this, but the main reason why it got 4 stars was because of a scene at the end with a character and his father. Kind of had me tearing up a little bit.

Wow. I can't believe it took me so long to read this book. What a fascinating tale of friendship, history, father/son relationships, and more. I confess I got a bit bored when the boys were in college...but then other drama happened, which I shall not spoil. ;)
I was also impressed by how the author would guide the reader's reactions with Reuven so you were angry when he was and surprised when other characters showed him a hidden side.
Overall, enjoyed it. :)

Great book. The cultural aspects of the two different Jewish sects were really fascinating to me. Knocked off a star for language.

interesting for a school book but why were some of the paragraphs longer than a page bruh
Great book! I enjoyed learning more about Judaism, specifically the various branches of the faith. The story was intriguing from the beginning and I loved all the characters. I also found it interesting to learn more about what happened when WWII ended and how the American Jews reacted to the facts of what really had happened in Europe.
