Cyclops goes to prison so that the inmates can kill him. Wolverine almost kills him. Wolverine apologizes to him hoping he'll do the right thing. Magik, Danger and Magneto break him out of jail and they become mutant outlaws protecting mutants and saving the world. Colossus is in hiding. Wakanda's still pissed off at mutants and Namor is mad that the Phoenix force "made him" destroy Wakanda.
Not bad, you almost feel sorry for Scott. Seems like this will just lead to more "Avengers vs X-men", but maybe not.

There is a certain joy in reading a story out of order and not knowing when you are going to find an unexpected puzzle piece. In this case I still haven't came across the Extinction story in which Scott Summers as the Phoenix Force does what he does. But in this one we get to see Scott Summers become what he becomes next. And it is pretty awesome. I still can't get over Scott Summers as an interesting readable character. And unlike the Avenger's books, Logan doesn't suck - though his art is a little off. Actually this is a bit of a travelogue check-in with lots of characters - and most of them done pretty well - Kitty and Ororo probably the weakest but still okay.

The dreadful A vs X cross-over that preceded this might perhaps be justified by the Consequences coda. Which means I will be looking for Kieron Gillen's books from now on.

This was better than the main AvX storyline, but then so is getting kicked in the shins, so that's not all that impressive a feat.
There are two storylines here, the primary one following Cyclops in his prison and a secondary one following Hope as she looks for her father. Now, I'm not sure exactly who Hope's dad is. They say it's Cable, but it's apparently a different Cable from the original continuity. (Cable was after my time, so I'm not really sure what's going on here. I don't care enough to look it up, either. A comic book story should be entirely self-contained, and I find a couple paragraphs at the beginning of books like these detailing what's gone before to be perfectly acceptable. Sadly, there's no "Previously" here.)
The Hope story was mostly a distraction. I think it was thrown in just to tie up some loose ends. It's an end I didn't remember being loose, so I didn't find it interesting.
As far as I know, I've never read anything by Kieron Gillen. If this is an example of his work, then I need to find more of what he's done, because it's terrific. His dialogue for each character is distinct, he has clever wordy bits and the pacing is spectacular. It's rare to find a comic book writer who knows when to let the story breathe. Edit: Apparently I read his Iron Man collection earlier this year, [b:Iron Man, Vol. 1: Believe|16002166|Iron Man, Vol. 1 Believe|Kieron Gillen|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1352383051s/16002166.jpg|21764143], and gave it 4 stars. So I do like his stuff.
Sadly, the artwork isn't nearly as good as the script. Each section is drawn by a different artist, and they range from really weird to merely adequate. Now, a good story can compensate for bad or weird art, but in this instance some of the faces are *so* weird that it's actually distracting.
Overall it's not too bad, but it doesn't feel like a whole story. I'd really like to read a complete saga by Gillen sometime. Must go look.

I really didn't like [book:Avengers vs. X-Men|14885892] much. The main arc, that is. However, some of the things that have been done around it (like [book:Avengers vs. X-Men: X-Men Legacy|16089316]) have been good, even really good.
This is one of those.
We don't get much, only snippets of what is happening to our heroes. And yet through that we get a lot. Gillen manages to make us understand many things from bits of storyline.
I still thought it was a bit too short (I would have liked to see more on Wakanda, for instance), but that's probably because this is supposed to be a stepping stone towards other series.

If you followed Avengers vs. X-Men then this is required reading.
Typically these tie-in books don't add much to the overall story, but I found this one to be the exception. It added a lot of depth to Cyclops and Wolverine and took a deeper look at their relationship.
