The writing was intelligent and humorous, the story complex and the characters well-rounded.

A twisting read and great introduction to this world that does have a number of moving pieces to it that can be a bit hard to keep track of.
The voice of Peter is consistently recognized as a science-users approach to magic whose mind wanders a lot. The illustrations were a welcome surprise. I did find myself thinking "Wait, who was that?" a bit too much; perhaps my sign to start keeping character indexes.

Thought this one might be right down my alley based on the description. But unfortunately, this was not for me.
2.5 but rounding down to 2 as I spent most of this book annoyed. Yes I probably should have DNF'd but I wanted to see it through..
The story itself isn't a bad story. It's quite interesting - Police Constable recruited to a department of the Metropolitan Police dealing with supernatural entities. The world building is interesting. The writing is a bit dry for me but it's not a dealbreaker. I think the fact that the MC was never surprised threw me a bit. No-one was surprised. At the beginning he was literally taking a witness statement from a ghost (on the back, no spoilers) but there was no reaction other than "best make sure I get a reliable account" or whatever it was.
Another issue I had with this book were the constant sexual remarks. Don't get me wrong, a lot of times I couldn't care less. I get it, he's a lad and he happens to be attracted to women. The fact of the matter is though that sometimes in books there's a time and a place. Those times and places, in my opinion, probably shouldn't be after an awful crime scene, it probably shouldn't be while he's running after his possessed friend while trying to rescue her and probably shouldn't be in the midst of a riot & fires. When you're in those emotional or high stakes scenes an off the cuff comment like that can really take you out of the moment because - how is that what you're focussing on right now??
I was warned going into this but yes, most women are described by their physical attributes. I'll be fair and say that there were a lot of strong, intelligent women in this book.
Some of the sexual remarks I would have dealt with - like I say I get that he's a straight man and we're in his head but, again, the timing was just so off and I'm not sure we really needed to know how he felt physically toward so many of the female characters we're introduced to.
There was also this gem of a line which I considered putting down for good after I read it: “The voice belonged to a plump round-faced young woman of the sort who develops a good personality because the alternative would be suicide”
... it's supposed to be an off the cuff remark. I would say I have quite a dry sense of humour but a lot of it kind of missed the mark for me in this one. Actually quite a few of the remarks made me wince or cringe.
There was one line I enjoyed at the end regarding an assailant who had his.. actually I wonder if this is suitable for Goodreads?
I have so many more thoughts on this book. Like I say, I want to be fair. The story itself is interesting, though I'm not sure it's told in the most interesting way. There's nothing that makes me really intrigued or excited to pick up the next one. I didn't dislike the characters at all, strangely enough. Despite a lot of his remarks the MC is actually a pretty alright guy.
I feel like it's one of those things for me which, I feel like it could be really really great, and for a lot of people it is. It's just not for me.
