I liked a lot of things about this book. I wish there was slightly less pointless objectification of women, but that might just be a product of its time. Many friends have told me that the series is worth it, overall, so I'll still read the next book.

Didn't sleep till every book in this series was finished. Totally engrossing, and whilst enjoyable in the same vein as the Laundry files, was darker and less self-consciously nerdy. Recommended.

What a fun book! I've had this for a few months on loan from a friend who highly recommended it - and the timing is pretty good, right after reading the history of time travel. To be honest - reading the cover didn't excite me but once I got past the first 10 pages where our intrepid protagonist meets his first ghost, I was hooked and spent all of what looked like a lovely Saturday reading the book (I did make it out for a swim and then returned to finish the last 60 pages and postponed the cats' dinner to do so).
This book compares favorably to "American Gods" - there's a similar sense of "backstage" and our protagonist (who narrates in 1st person) is similarly learning all sorts of new things that he never knew were true before, but does it with a totally different attitude.
Aaronovitch writes with a lot of humor -- and he provides backstory deftly and in a way that supports the story instead of overwhelming it. This isn't your average police procedural - it's got lots of fun twists and character development, and I'm definitely planning to read the rest of the series.

This book is a delightful urban fantasy that focuses set in London. I thought that the characters were interesting, and Peter was a delightful perspective. The book has an interesting mystery, and while it’s not the most fascinating ever written, it’s excellent for a good time.
The only thing I didn’t love is that Peter is a horny character. This is more a matter of taste, I don’t think that any of his actions or perspectives crossed a line, it’s just not for me.
