A bit tough to read at times; but powerfully descriptive narrative of an era and place where things were changing heavily. One can also feel how much the Artist himself was changing during his coming-of-age. Admittedly, this style of writing is never easy to follow; as I was told not long ago, perhaps one must read Joyce without thinking much of whether you're understanding at all, but just going with the flow of the pages.
“Have read little and understood less” is a brilliant quote here for many reasons.
Listening to http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00nyxvr was also helpful to grasp the context in which the story is set.

Joyce's lyricism is unbelievable. Actually, this book is better if you listen to it, and don't get to caught up on where you are going, just enjoy the traveling.
I have never been so happy to finish a book. I couldn't tell you what it was about. It follows a young man through some period of time of his life but the point of it all escapes me.
Life's too short to read books you don't feel like reading.
I got to page 126 God knows how, after a lot of bluntly skipping entire texts of pure boredom.
I don't know if it was the plot or the writing but this book slowly killed me.
Yes. it's that boring.
I'm sorry Joyce.

I really enjoyed the beginning... but I can't get through the hundred page long rant on sin. I'm sorry.
This is easily the worst book I have read since reading Sophie's World seven years ago. It has the same impossibly complex prose which is meant to sound wonderful and intellectual but actually is suffocatingly boring as Sophie's World. I imagine the only reason people applaud this book and hail it as a masterpiece and Joyce the most influential Irish author of all time is that 1) it is an emperor-with-no-clothes scenario and that we are supposed to like it, so everyone pretends to and 2) Joyce is one of probably 3 total Irish authors, so he wins the title by default. All in all reading this took me a really long time and was an unenjoyable experience. I will not be voluntarily reading anything by Joyce ever again.
