A triumph

I like this less than Ulysses or Dubliners, even if it is a bit of a bridge between the two. I had read this many years ago when I was young and probably didn't understand a lot of it. I thought it was time to read it as an adult.

I'd checked "Ulysses" out of the library a year or two before I first read "Portrait" nd was unable to finish "Ulysses." I picked up this one instead, and found it easier going. I re-read it in 2008. It's one of those classics I'm glad I read, but I only liked it, didn't love it.

moo cow

I was forced to read this book as a senior in high school. It was my English teacher's favorite book and it was highly regarded as a classic so I came into it with high expectations. Unfortunately, I was completely let down by this novel. The story is confusing and pointless, the characters are uninteresting and undeveloped and the narrative structure is too hard to follow to make this book an easy read. I admire what Joyce has attempted to do with this book but I don't believe for a second that this book would still be so fondly remembered if it wasn't forced upon so many students by their English teachers who are convinced that it is a must read. Well, I've got bad news for them: it isn't!! This is a book that should remain in obscurity forever and ever. I still don't get why this book is so popular. Oh well, I guess I'm not elitist enough to appreciate it!!

FIRE prose you're really put into the mind of the character. however!!! very confusing and often kind of contrite, i feel like the text gets lost in itself and it’s own (very beautiful) wanderings? didn’t know what was happening most of the time but i enjoyed it

Loved it from the start , hated it for a bit then ended up crawling back to it and fell in love even harder. I have no words.
Its like a mix of Alphonse Daudet , my shower thoughts + my personal experiences and it also has some dark academia element .
This book means a lot to me , it makes me feel seen and articulate my thoughts so eloquently , though me and Stephen shared similar burdens we took different paths therefore our liberation was different.
I love it because it resonates with me , (this is the least objective and messiest review ive ever made. I love this book.)
