Avoided Moorcock's Elric of Melniboné for a long time because of criticism people made about melodrama or whatever. Once you realize the book is essentially a roman à clef about a moody goth kid, they're actually a lot of fun (think of the royal court as a high school). Think Jack Vance going for high drama.

The Ship that Travels Over Land and Sea was the coolest part.

 The epic start to a classic fantasy epic. This one has been sitting on my TBR for about 35 years, so it was about time to get it read. I can see the influence of this book's themes on countless fantasy books, with a brooding Elric, a powerful sentient sword, the machinations of higher powers on mortals, the epic quest, the destiny. It's good stuff.
