the first Elric story is.....kinda mid.
The character of Elric himself is interesting, and his moral quandary with being the emperor of such a sadistic nation is captivating. This book has solid vibes in terms of setting, but it's not very deep(yet).
The real issue is the lack of a plot. He just kinda bloods and quarrels with his cousin. Stormbringer is barely present, and I feel like it leaves a massive hole that the plot, prose, and pacing simply can't fill. Oh, and tons of dialogue filler. Using a whole word salad and providing zero literary calories.
Not terrible, but definitely altogether a weaker outing.

What a wonderful chaotic book. I did remember stuff but some had skip my mind. Elric is such a delightful character. LOTR was publish back in 1954 and Moorcock created this back in the late 60's. He really created something amazing. In LOTR is beautiful crafted and characters are pure white knights here is chaotic. Elric is the percursor of grimdark, of warhammer world, game of thrones and so on. Elric is such a interesting character, you think he will behave X and he just do the opposite. His love for Cymoril and even with his love finally he must sacrifice the quietude, happiness for the journey of discovery. Is like people who even when happy with their family or place can't stay idle. Wanderlust is the correct word I Think. The gods, elementals, the name dropping (connecting to other novels he wrote or would be writing) and so on. Everything here is interesting... he really created the chaotic element on the table D&D uses usually.

I was a little meh on this book until King Grome showed up and I understood the charm. I had a dumb grin on my face during Grome’s appearance and the campiness continues from there. The writing was serviceable and the characters were a little flat, but what really stood out to me was the charm. If you’re into sword and sorcery, you will probably like this book. I liked it enough to continue on.
3.5 - half stars should be a thing!
After having read/listened to four of the books 1, 2, 3 and 5 in the chronological order, I must admit while parts of the story are interesting, the books to me feel rather like fairy tales for adults in the way it is written or perhaps it is the narration making it feel worse/kid-like. Some of the stories/parts of them feels very like when you had one of those books when you first started out with somewhat short sentences, written in a certain way/rythm. Eg. This is Bob. Bob is a blob. Bob the blob enjoys eating grass.
That said interesting, but also very typical old school written fantasy. However I'll not continue the saga, the writing style is not entirely my jam and hadn't all 4 books been combined in 1 audiobook I would have stopped after the first one. .

First I must say that it's almost impossible to know if this book is really simple, or really complex. It amazes me, but I think it's both? So simple and so intricate at the same time
Secondly, Elric makes me mad. He is so wise and powerful and again, he is so naive. His naiveness makes me crazy! How can a person so wise fail to see what is so obvious? How is he so ignorant?
But everything said, I loved this book. It was fun and I can't wait to reas the rest.
